IWC CELEBRATES THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF ANTOINE DE SAINT EXUPÉRY’S ATLANTIC CROSSING

IWC Schaffhausen and the Antoine de Saint Exupéry Youth Foundation have marked the 80th anniversary of Antoine de Saint Exupéry’s historic flight across the Atlantic, with an exhibition at the IWC Boutique in New York. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer has also created a special timepiece, the Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Chronograph Edition “80 Years Flight to New York”, to commemorate the author’s trip aboard the French flying boat Latécoère 521.

In addition to breaking records as a pilot, Antoine de Saint Exupéry made aviation history as a passenger too. Travelling onboard the Latécoère 521 “Lieutenant de Vaisseau Paris” in July 1939, the aviator and writer took part in the flying boat’s first nonstop crossing of the North Atlantic in just 28 hours and 27 minutes. Celebrating the anniversary of his involvement in this epic flight, IWC Schaffhausen’s exhibition showcases stunning photographs and other items from the period. As well as telling the story of Saint Exupéry’s journey aboard the luxuriously-equipped flying boat, the retrospective looks back on the exciting times the famous French aviator and writer spent in New York itself. While living there, he wrote his most famous literary work, “Le Petit Prince” (“The Little Prince”). Indeed, the Big Apple is so significant in his career that IWC and the Antoine de Saint Exupéry Youth Foundation, in partnership with the Latécoère Foundation, have published a new coffee table book on the subject. Lavishly designed, it will be on display at IWC Boutiques around the world.

At the anniversary exhibition in New York, IWC also officially launched the Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Chronograph Edition “80 Years Flight to New York” (Ref. IW395003). In a nod to the transatlantic flight itself, the timepiece features the patented timezoner function, which allows the wearer to adjust the time zone by simply pressing down and rotating the bezel. On the bezel made of brown ceramic, “Paris” and “New York” are marked in red. The sepia-brown dial is inspired by the pilot suits from the era of Saint Exupéry, and the case back features an engraving of the Latécoère 521. The watch is powered by the IWC-manufactured 89760 calibre and features a chronograph function that displays the stopped hours and minutes combined on a s ubdial at “12 o’clock”.

In recognition of it being the 80th anniversary of the flight, the new watch will be limited to just 80 pieces. IWC will donate the full proceeds from the sale of the first watch (piece “1 of 80”) to the Saint Exupéry Foundation, as it continues to support educational programmes for young people around the world.

Η IWC Schaffhausen και το Ίδρυμα Νέων Antoine de Saint Exupéry, γιόρτασαν την 80η επέτειο από την ιστορική πτήση του Antoine de Saint Exupéry πάνω από τον Ατλαντικό Ωκεανό, με τη διοργάνωση έκθεσης στη Boutique της IWC στη Νέα Υόρκη. Ο Ελβετικός οίκος υψηλής ωρολογοποιίας, κατασκεύασε επίσης και ένα ειδικό ρολόι, το Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Chronograph Edition “80 Years Flight to New York”, προς τιμήν του ταξιδιού που πραγματοποίησε ο συγγραφέας με το Γαλλικό υδροπλάνο Latécoère 521. 

Ο Antoine de Saint Exupéry, εκτός από το να καταρρίπτει ρεκόρ σαν πιλότος, έγραψε ιστορία στην αεροπλοΐα και σαν επιβάτης. Ο Γάλλος συγγραφέας ταξιδεύοντας με το Latécoère 521 “Lieutenant de Vaisseau Paris”, τον Ιούλιο του 1939, συμμετείχε στον διάπλου του Βορείου Ατλαντικού που πραγματοποίησε το υδροπλάνο χωρίς να κάνει στάσεις, σε μόλις 28 ώρες και 27 λεπτά. Προς τιμή της επετείου της συμμετοχής του στην επική αυτή πτήση, η IWC Schaffhausen διοργάνωσε έκθεση με μοναδικές φωτογραφίες και άλλα αντικείμενα εκείνης της περιόδου. Εκτός από την αφήγηση της ιστορίας του ταξιδιού του Saint Exupéry με το πολυτελές υδροπλάνο, η έκθεση κάνει αναδρομή και στη συναρπαστική περίοδο που ο διάσημος Γάλλος συγγραφέας και πιλότος έμεινε στη Νέα Υόρκη. Κατά την παραμονή του εκεί έγραψε το πιο διάσημο έργο του, «O Μικρός Πρίγκηπας». Η Νέα Υόρκη, έπαιξε τόσο καθοριστικό ρόλο στην καριέρα του Saint Exupéry ώστε η IWC και το Ίδρυμα Νέων Antoine de Saint Exupéry, σε συνεργασία με το Ίδρυμα Latécoère, εξέδωσαν ένα νέο εικονογραφημένο λεύκωμα με αυτό το θέμα. Το βιβλίο με τον πολυτελή σχεδιασμό θα εκτίθεται στις Boutique της IWC σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο. 

Στην επετειακή έκθεση της Νέας Υόρκης, η  IWC επίσης παρουσίασε επίσημα το Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Chronograph Edition “80 Years Flight to New York” (Ref. IW395003). Κάνοντας αναφορά στην υπερατλαντική πτήση του Latécoère 521, το ρολόι περιλαμβάνει την πατενταρισμένη λειτουργία Timezoner, η οποία δίνει τη δυνατότητα στον κάτοχο του να ρυθμίζει τη ζώνη ώρας απλά πιέζοντας προς τα κάτω το bezel και περιστρέφοντας το ταυτόχρονα. Πάνω στο bezel που είναι κατασκευασμένο από καφέ κεραμικό υλικό, αναγράφονται οι λέξεις «Paris» και «New York» με κόκκινο. Το καντράν σε χρώμα  καφέ είναι εμπνευσμένο από τις στολές των πιλότων της εποχής του Saint

Exupéry, ενώ στο πίσω μέρος της κάσας έχει σκαλιστεί ένα σχέδιο του Latécoère 521. Το ρολόι τροφοδοτείται από τον μηχανισμό 89760 calibre που έχει κατασκευάσει η IWC και περιλαμβάνει λειτουργία χρονογράφου η οποία εμφανίζει τη μέτρηση των ωρών και των λεπτών σε ένα υποκαντράν που βρίσκεται σε ξεχωριστό παράθυρο στη θέση 12.

Σε αναφορά της 80ης επετείου της πτήσης, το ρολόι διατίθεται σε περιορισμένο αριθμό 80 τεμαχίων. Η IWC θα δωρίσει όλα τα έσοδα από την πώληση του πρώτου ρολογιού με τον αριθμό 1, στο Ίδρυμα Saint Exupéry, συνεχίζοντας έτσι να υποστηρίζει τα εκπαιδευτικά προγράμματα για νέους σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο.
